The Mandvi Education Society Institute of Computer Studies


MCA is a three year (6 semesters) and two year (4 semesters) lateral entry PG programme affiliated with Gujarat Technological University (GTU), Ahmedabad.The curriculum has a strong core covering information technology, business management and mathematics. The students entering MCA must have a B.C.A./B.Sc./ B.Com/B.A. degree with Mathematics as one of the subjects at 10+2 level or at graduation. Of the 6 semesters one semester is to be spent in an industry developing a software system. The MCA programme is planned to have 5 theory subject plus two laboratories each semester.

The University grants commission (UGC) India and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) recognizes MCA as a three year masters degree and from 2013 two year lateral entry in computer science.

Eligibility Criteria

  • A candidate shall have passed the qualifying examination with minimum of 50% marks (45% marks in case SC/ST/OBC category) of grand total.
  • A candidate shall have passed the Higher Secondary School Examination (Standard XII, 10+2 pattern) and Bachelor's degree with Mathematics or Business Mathematics or Statistics as one of the subjects.
  • A candidate shall have appeared in the CMAT (Common Management Aptitude Test) as prescribed by AICTE, for the corresponding year.

Program Structure

MCA programs take place over three academic years or two years for lateral entry students. Students take classes during weekdays like other university students and sit for semester examination twice a year.

Course Modules:

In each semester, there would be seven course modules with a total teaching time of 50 hours per paper per semester. Each subject paper would consist of four or five credits.

Of the 25 subjects 16 are in information technology, 2 in business management, 4 in mathematics and 3 are electives. It is observed that 85% of the curriculum consists of compulsory courses and 15% are electives. Each laboratory should be of at least 2 hour duration. Each student should spend at least 2 hours on a terminal per day.

Besides formal courses the curriculum includes one lecture per week in the 5th semester by an industry representative who would present the current application of computer in their industry.

Project Work

Each student will do a mini-project in the 5th Semester, and a major full-time project in Semester 6. Projects will be undertaken by students in teamor individual and at the end of the project, students submit a project report, do a presentation on the subject of the report, and appear for a viva-voce on the project. Performance will be evaluated by internal and external examiners.

Assessment Pattern

The MCA Programme is carried out based on semester pattern with six semesters in three academic years.

  • The assessment pattern for MCA programme comprises a module of a final semester-end examination carried out by the Gujarat Technological University and internal evaluation by the college as well.
  • All subjects having theory or theory and practical/tutorial have 70 marks of GTU’s final theory exam(E), 30 marks of mid –semester college exam(M) and 50 marks of internal assessment/Continuous Evaluation Component.(I).
  • Constant analysis of assignment, seminars, quizzes, attendance, regularity and behaviour takes place by the concerned faculty who decides the scheme of assessment and announces at the beginning of the term.(semester).
  • Only practical/tutorial subjects will have 80 marks of University exam and 20 marks of constants internal evaluation at the institute level.
  • The passing norm is minimum 50 % of marks in each individual head of University exam, mid semester exam and internal assessment for all the subjects.
  • In case of the backlog(less than 50% marks in any component); whenever student clears the component, only 50%marks (max) is considered out of total marks for the subjects /head.
  • There will be one mid semester exam in a semester for University exam as well as remedial test. In case of failure to clear the remedial, student will have to appear in the regular semester test in the subsequent year.
  • Student having more than 4 backlogs after declaration of remedial exam result is not allowed for further studies, till he/she clears backlog/s; so as total number of backlogs are not more than 4.
  • Duration of the question paper is 2:30 hours.
  • There will be 5 questions of maximum 70 marks out of which questions of 21 marks will be compulsory.
  • After adding the internal marks with the marks secured by the student in the University examination, the marks will be converted to a letter grade as per the following:
1.85 -100 marks - AA grade
2.75 - 84 marks - AB grade
3.65 - 74 marks - BB grade
4.55 - 64 marks - BC grade
5.50 - 54 marks - CC grade
6.Less than 50 marks is FF grade
